The Islam House of Wisdom, a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution, today announced the launch of a landmark initiative to establish an international Academy of 100 Distinguished Scholars — a modern revival of the legendary Bayt al-Hikma (House of Wisdom) that flourished in Baghdad under Caliph al-Ma'mun between 813 and 833 CE.
The original House of Wisdom was the intellectual crown of Islam's Golden Age — a gathering of the world's greatest minds across faith, language, and origin, producing breakthroughs in mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and medicine that shaped both Islamic and Western civilization. The Islam House of Wisdom seeks to revive that spirit for the challenges of the 21st century.
The Academy: Structure and Mission
The proposed Academy will comprise 100 of the world's most accomplished scholars, self-governed and independent of government or religious establishment influence. Scholar nominations will be accepted exclusively from accredited universities and internationally recognized research centers, ensuring rigorous academic integrity.
The 100 seats will be distributed across six scholarly domains — Islamic Jurisprudence and Legal Reform; Islamic Economics, Finance and Development; Science, Technology, Medicine and Innovation; Governance, Political Theory and Human Rights; Arts, Philosophy and Civilizational Studies; and Interfaith Dialogue, Intercultural Studies and Education — with regional representation guaranteed across North Africa, the Gulf, the Levant, South and Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Europe and the Americas.
Membership is open to scholars of all faiths, all ethnicities, and all national origins — faithful to the inclusive spirit of the original House of Wisdom.
Inaugural Conference Theme
The Academy's inaugural conference will be convened under the theme: From the Golden Age to the Digital Age — a declaration that the tradition of transformative Islamic scholarship is not a relic of history but a living force with urgent relevance to the modern world.
